Deviated Septum

The septum is a thin wall made of bone and cartilage. It splits the nasal passages. But sometimes the septum has flaws in structure and that’s why one nasal passage is smaller than another nasal passage. People face breathing problems due to this error. Most of the time, people can’t understand where the fault is.

Symptoms of a Deviated Septum

  • Nosebleeds

  • Nasal obstruction

  • Facial pain

  • Nasal deformity

  • Snoring and sleep apnea

  • Noisy breathing during sleep

  • Postnasal drip (you can notice a sensation of mucus dripping down the back of your throat)

  • Awareness of the nasal cycle

  • You may feel difficulty while breathing due to reduced airflow through one side of your nose.

If you take medicines such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays, these help you to shrink the soft tissue structure of the nasal passage and reduce the symptoms but it does not solve the problem permanently.

When Does the Patient Need Nose Septum Surgery?

When you can’t relieve yourself by taking various medications. Then the doctor suggests nose septum surgery to solve the issue of deviated septum and reduce the symptoms. The surgery is known as septoplasty and the doctor may modify the inferior turbinates for providing a balanced nasal airway between the two sides.

The Procedure of Septoplasty

At first, the doctor will give you general or local anesthesia so that you don’t feel any pain during surgery. After that, the specialist will make an excision inside of your nose. As a result, there is no need of cutting outside skin and you will not feel swelling on the outside of the nose. Next, the doctor will trim, set a new position and replace the bone or cartilage in your septum and use sutures for closing the excision. The doctor may place soft splints, packing and sutures so that the septum will be supported properly after healing.

After the surgery, the surgeon will monitor you the whole day and you can go home the very next day. Most of the patients can return to their daily activities within a week.
