We at Oklahoma Otolaryngology Associates need to remind ourselves regularly that the terms that we use on a daily basis here in the office are not so familiar to the community at large. We love to be educators in the field of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), and this is what makes us makes us the top ENT groups in the entire state of Oklahoma
There are particular symptoms that signal the need for you to make an appointment to see an ear, nose, and throat doctor. Another term for this type of doctor—while less known to many—is “Otolaryngologist.”
Going to see an ENT can help you understand what is causing your symptoms.
Common Symptoms that may signal a visit to an ENT:
Headaches: A headache that won’t go away is one of the symptoms that is commonly misunderstood by patients. Although a headache may be the result of a sinus problem, it may also be related to acute upper respiratory infections, chronic sinusitis or other abnormalities. Your ENT may suggest a CT scan, as this can help define the cause and point the way towards effective treatment.
Sore Throat: For the past several months, have you had a sore throat? Difficulty swallowing? Are you losing your voice? After taking antibiotics, does it not seem to be getting better? This may be cause for concern. There could be something wrong with your throat or the symptoms and irritation may be related to a condition in another area of your body, such as your sinuses or upper digestive tract.
Sinus Pain: If you are experiencing pain in your face, upper teeth or in your ear, or have other symptoms including drainage or abnormal nasal congestion, then you should make an appointment with one of our physicians. It may just be allergies—however, there are more serious issues which may be associated with them.
Congestion: This condition can lead to discomfort as well as pain. If you are experiencing feelings of pressure in your head, headaches or dizziness, it is definitely time to give us a call and make an appointment with one of our physicians. If congestion is ongoing, it may be cause for concern.
Hearing Loss: If you are experiencing hearing loss, this may mean you have an issue with an eardrum, ear canal or the bones connected to the eardrum. There may just be a buildup of material in the ear, such as fluid or ear wax, which must be removed. Your ENT has special tools to safely clean deep into your ears. Other type of hearing loss can be corrected with the use of a hearing aid.
Airway Blockage: There are many reasons why you may be having difficulty breathing through your nose—it may be a deviated septum, an infection or the development of polyps. Your ENT is trained especially to help pinpoint the problem.
